Why I Do This Work

My work is both personal and professional.

After becoming a mother in 2019, I experienced first-hand the challenges of communicating safeguarding concerns within the family justice system during family mediation. Despite my professional background in safeguarding, I found that concerns could be difficult to convey and were sometimes viewed in isolation rather than within the wider context of family dynamics.
Like many protective parents, I experienced the emotional toll of managing difficult communication and the uncertainty of whether concerns were being fully understood or appropriately considered.

This experience reinforced for me how complex it can be to evidence and communicate emotional harm and its impact on children. It also highlighted how overwhelming these processes can feel for parents without specialist safeguarding knowledge, inspiring me to support others in navigating them with greater confidence, clarity, and structure.

What became clear was this: emotional and psychological abuse, particularly coercive control and its impact on children, is incredibly difficult to evidence and communicate, especially within systems that are often focused on reaching agreement based on the presumption of a child having the right to contact with both parents, rather than prioritising risk.
